The President of Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, Tariq Hameed Karra, has called for an impartial judicial inquiry into the Leh violence of September 24, which resulted in the deaths of four individuals. He insists that an inquiry should either be conducted by a sitting High Court judge or, if that is not feasible, by a retired judge of unquestionable integrity.
Addressing the press, Karra stated, “Whatever happened in Leh should not be repeated, but there must be an inquiry. If a sitting High Court judge is not available on fast track, then the probe should be entrusted to a credible retired judge.” Karra emphasized the need for accountability and justice for the victims and their families.
On the same day, he paid respects to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, commemorating their birth anniversaries. He reflected on their leadership, ethical principles, and unwavering commitment to a self-reliant India. Karra noted how Gandhian philosophy continues to resonate globally, even receiving recognition at the United Nations.
As the Rajya Sabha elections inch closer, he mentioned that discussions regarding seat sharing and alliances would occur under the aegis of the Congress leadership at the central level. Karra indicated that senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh has been designated as the observer for this crucial process.
Commenting on the status of Independent legislator Mehraj Malik, who has been in custody, Karra asserted that he must be given permission to attend the Assembly session. He drew a parallel to how Engineer Rashid was permitted to partake in parliamentary proceedings despite being incarcerated in Tihar Jail. He stated, “By the same analogy, Mehraj Malik should also be allowed.”
