On Wednesday, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra declared her strong opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists proposed by the Election Commission (EC) in Kerala. Her remarks came during a two-day visit to her Wayanad constituency.
Priyanka criticized the EC for allegedly using the SIR process as a mechanism to manipulate electoral rolls. She stated, “The Election Commission is planning to carry out SIR of voter lists in many states, including Kerala, and we will strongly oppose it.”
Highlighting her party’s previous battles against the revised voter lists, she said, “Given how they have done it in Bihar, we have fought against it in Parliament and outside it. We will continue to fight against it everywhere.”
Priyanka branded the SIR initiative as “the only way of committing fraud and cheating in the election.” She expressed concerns over the implications for democracy, asserting that the implementation of SIR in Bihar had created significant disruptions and an unfair electoral environment. “We have seen what they did in Bihar and how they implemented SIR there. If that is what they are going to do in every state, then it is an affront to democracy, and we have to fight it,” she emphasized.
During her visit, Priyanka inaugurated the newly constructed Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Government Ayurveda Dispensary building in Ernad, Malappuram district. This facility falls under her constituency and aims to enhance healthcare access for local residents.
Arriving at Karipur airport in the morning, Priyanka proceeded to travel to Wayanad by road. In addition to inaugurating the dispensary, she is expected to launch various development projects that reflect Congress’s commitment to local progress, party sources confirmed.
Priyanka’s vocal objection to the SIR underscores a growing rift between the Congress party and the Election Commission. The upcoming elections will see heightened scrutiny over electoral processes. As political debates intensify, the Congress party continues to assert its intent to protect democratic integrity, advocating for transparency and fairness in the electoral landscape.
