The Congress party launched a fierce critique of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, asserting that rising unemployment has become a matter of grave concern in India. While the nation grapples with economic turmoil, the Prime Minister remains “always in election mode,” focusing on creating speeches that divert public attention instead of tackling these urgent issues.
Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, highlighted the implications of what he describes as the “past 11 years of misrule” under the Modi administration. He expressed that every segment of society feels the impact of policies that have led to despair and discontent.
In a post shared on X, Ramesh wrote in Hindi, “Students, youth, farmers, labourers, workers, shopkeepers, employees, businessmen – not a single section is happy with this government. Inflation is skyrocketing, the value of the rupee is continuously falling, and the gap between the rich and poor is widening, making life difficult for poor and middle-class families.” This statement captures the widespread unhappiness with the current administration.
Ramesh emphasized the urgent nature of the unemployment crisis, stating that rising unemployment in this context has become a matter of grave concern. Citing data from the latest CMIE (Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy) report, he noted that India’s unemployment rate rose to 7.5% in October 2025, marking the highest level in the past six months.
“Millions of people have lost their jobs across sectors, including construction and IT-banking. Over 90 lakh people have lost their jobs in the construction industry alone, while the number of salaried jobs has declined by 25 lakh,” he stated, painting a dire picture of the current job market.
To underscore the urgency of this situation, Ramesh pointed out that such alarming figures have emerged year after year during Modi’s tenure. Yet, he lamented, the government seems indifferent to escalating employment challenges.
Addressing the Prime Minister directly, Ramesh remarked, “It seems Modi ji has no concern for the youth of this country. Always in election mode, he is busy crafting new speeches and narratives to distract the public instead of solving the unemployment crisis.” This commentary resonates with many disillusioned citizens keen for a change in leadership focus.
Furthermore, the Congress party has persistently criticized the government’s economic management, claiming that rising prices, falling private investment, and stagnating wages are adversely affecting ordinary citizens. They argue for a shift in priorities toward real economic reforms and job creation, as opposed to merely relying on propaganda and political rhetoric.
As elections approach, the Congress party strategically leverages this discourse on unemployment in a bid to reshape public sentiment and hold the government accountable. The juxtaposition of Modi’s focus on political campaigning against the pressing economic backdrop forms a significant part of the ongoing political discourse in the country.
Observers note that if Modi fails to address these mounting concerns, it could cost him vital support in the upcoming elections. The Congress party, amidst both internal challenges and broader national issues, seeks to solidify its position by promising a shift from the current administration’s policies.
