Kashmir Valley’s night temperatures increased following the end of the 40-day winter period, Chillai Kalan, on Friday. This notable change has provided much-needed relief from the severe cold that characterizes this time of year.
The Meteorological Department reported significant warming across several regions. In Srinagar, the temperature climbed to 1.3 degrees Celsius, a marked rise from the previous night’s low of -0.6 degrees Celsius. This new record exceeds the seasonal average by 2.2 degrees.
Other regions that recorded above-freezing temperatures included Konibal at 1.0 degrees Celsius, Pulwama at 0.1 degrees Celsius, and Kulgam at 1.1 degrees Celsius. Most weather stations across the Valley reported minimum temperatures higher than usual for this period.
Despite the rise in temperatures, colder conditions remain evident in the higher altitudes. In Sonamarg, part of Ganderbal district, the temperature dipped to a chilling -10.6 degrees Celsius, marginally better than the previous reading of -11.2 degrees Celsius. The famed ski resort of Gulmarg recorded -9 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam noted -5.3 degrees Celsius.
Other regions, such as Qazigund at -0.3 degrees Celsius, Kokernag at -0.6 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara at -3.1 degrees Celsius, also reported low temperatures, maintaining the region’s winter chill.
Chillai Kalan, which began on December 21, marks the coldest time of winter in Kashmir renowned for frequent snowfall in higher terrains. As this period ends, the Valley transitions into the 20-day Chillai Khurd (small cold), which will be followed by the 10-day Chillai Bachha (baby cold).
The Meteorological Department anticipates that a fresh western disturbance will arrive on Sunday, possibly ushering in another round of wet weather that could further impact temperatures across the region.
