In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms, marking one of the heaviest deliveries in the hospital’s history. The baby was born on October 25, 2025, at 1:20 PM, to a diabetic mother.
Upon birth, the newborn experienced severe respiratory distress within the first thirty minutes. Health professionals at GMC Doda quickly recognized the critical condition of the infant and promptly admitted the child to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management and close monitoring.
The baby showed signs of being large-for-gestational-age and required immediate neonatal respiratory support. Medical staff closely observed the infant’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation levels, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Over subsequent days, the infant began to respond positively, enabling a gradual reduction of respiratory assistance.
As the final seventy-two hours approached before the baby’s discharge, the infant exhibited stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation levels, and effective temperature regulation. The medical team noted no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation, which are critical indicators of healthy recovery.
After demonstrating sustained clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in healthy condition, with routine follow-up care advised for continued monitoring. This successful case was managed under the experienced guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics, and followed the supervision of senior faculty members including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma, alongside a dedicated team of senior and junior residents.
Special acknowledgment is directed towards the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda. Their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care played a crucial role in the overall recovery of the baby. This case represents the dedication of the hospital’s staff to improve neonatal outcomes.
The successful management of this challenging case highlights the expanding expertise available within the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. The institution continues to reinforce its commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region.
