Prof. Gupta discusses earthquake preparedness with CM Abdullah

On September 24, 2023, renowned earth scientist Prof. Harsh K. Gupta met Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at the Public Outreach Office in Jammu to address earthquake resilience and disaster preparedness in Jammu and Kashmir. This crucial meeting aimed to strengthen infrastructure against the region’s seismic vulnerabilities.

The interaction also included Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, and Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, Vice-Chancellor of the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST). The gathering highlighted the collaborative efforts required to enhance safety measures in a region at significant risk of earthquakes.

Prof. Gupta, a former member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and ex-Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, presented a comprehensive analysis on the urgent need for earthquake-resistant infrastructure in Kashmir, which lies within the vulnerable Himalayan earthquake belt. He advocated for implementing strategies similar to successful medium-term earthquake forecasts conducted in the northeastern Himalayan region.

In his presentation, Prof. Gupta proposed several actionable measures. He recommended the observance of an “Earthquake Safety Day”, training students in schools on safety protocols during earthquakes, and creating scenarios from past major quakes for planning purposes. He also emphasized the importance of conducting mega mock drills, ensuring strict adherence to earthquake-safe construction practices, and deploying Earthquake Early Warning Systems along the Himalayan belt.

Responding to Prof. Gupta’s recommendations, Chief Minister Abdullah expressed gratitude for the insights shared. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fortifying earthquake resilience in Jammu and Kashmir. The Chief Minister assured that Prof. Gupta’s suggestions would be integrated into the broader strategy for disaster preparedness and public safety.

Experts note that the region’s topography and tectonic settings amplify its susceptibility to seismic activity. The Himalayan region has a history of devastating earthquakes, making it imperative to adopt proactive measures urgently.

The government of Jammu and Kashmir recognizes these risks and aims to bolster the region’s disaster management capabilities. As part of this strategy, the authorities plan to enhance community-based preparedness and integrate scientific research into local practices.

The discussions led by Prof. Gupta illustrate a significant step forward in addressing the seismic vulnerabilities in Jammu and Kashmir. They set the stage for ongoing collaboration between scientific experts and governmental bodies to enhance disaster resilience.
