On World Tourism Day, National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah commended the Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government for revitalizing tourism after the tragic Pahalgam attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. Abdullah celebrated the reopening of tourist destinations across the region, marking a significant recovery.
Abdullah extended heartfelt greetings to the local community and global admirers of J&K’s scenic beauty and rich cultural heritage in an official statement. World Tourism Day was observed on September 27, prompting Abdullah to reflect on the tourism sector’s vital role in providing livelihoods and sustaining the region’s social fabric.
He praised the government, particularly the administration led by Omar Abdullah, for its swift and effective measures to restore tourist confidence following the Pahalgam tragedy. The NC chief highlighted that these efforts significantly reaffirmed J&K’s reputation as a safe and welcoming tourist destination.
“The Omar Abdullah-led administration responded promptly to restore tourism, laying a strong foundation for sustainable growth,” said Farooq Abdullah. He emphasized the importance of promoting sustainable tourism models, stating that they should protect both the environment and the rich local culture.
In light of the recent events, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha announced the reopening of several destinations that were closed post-attack. This decision was crucial in restoring faith in J&K as a premier tourist hub.
Abdullah underscored the necessity of inclusive development, calling for equal focus on regions like Chenab and Pir Panjal. He stressed that tourism must be for all, allowing every citizen to benefit from tourism-led growth.
“Let this World Tourism Day be a reminder of our shared duty to build a peaceful, progressive, and welcoming Jammu and Kashmir, where every visitor feels valued, and every citizen benefits from tourism-led growth,” Abdullah remarked.
The revitalization of tourism in J&K is not merely a response to recent adversities but a holistic approach to restoring the sector’s preeminence in the region. The NC president’s vision for a more inclusive tourism strategy underscores the importance of community-focused growth in the potential tourism boom ahead.
