Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded its coldest night this winter, as temperatures plunged to a chilling -2.1°C. The Meteorological Department (MeT) reported this significant drop in temperature on November 14, 2023, marking the beginning of extreme winter conditions in the region.

The cold wave gripped not only Srinagar but also Pahalgam, which registered the lowest temperature in the Kashmir Valley at -3.8°C. This remarkable chill has affected daily life in the valley, with residents bundling up and preparing for the harsh weather ahead.

Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the MeT, stated that weather forecasts indicate no wet spells for at least the next week. In his assessment, night temperatures are likely to remain steady until November 17. However, he mentioned, “There might be a slight improvement in night temperatures for two to three days after November 17.”

The plummeting temperatures led to frost formation in parts of Srinagar and the wider valley, creating a picturesque, albeit frigid, winter landscape. Such conditions are typical as Kashmir heads toward one of its most grueling seasons, forcing locals to adapt to the biting cold.

Residents are reminded to take necessary precautions as they face prolonged exposure to freezing conditions. The ongoing cold wave has implications for agriculture and livestock, as farmers prepare for safeguarding their crops and animals from frostbite and severe winter temperatures.

Overall, this cold snap is a testament to the bleak winter weather that characterizes Jammu and Kashmir during the December to February duration. While many relish the scenic beauty of snow-covered mountains, the challenges posed by extreme cold cannot be underestimated.

As the week progresses, the valley residents remain vigilant, keeping warm as they embrace the season’s first true taste of winter.
