Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced a significant fund of ₹30.14 crore directed towards various welfare schemes for construction workers in Jammu and Kashmir. This amount allows for direct online transfers to registered beneficiaries, reaffirming Abdullah’s commitment to labour welfare.
Officials confirm the allocation will promptly reach the bank accounts of eligible construction workers through all Assistant Labour Commissioners. This assistance will address vital needs and promote economic stability among the workers.
The welfare schemes included in the fund encompass essential support measures such as education assistance for workers’ children, disability aid, chronic illness support, and marriage assistance. Notably, the schemes also offer aid for the next of kin of deceased workers and provide meritorious awards for exemplary academic performance among children of registered workers.
During the recent 22nd meeting of the J&K Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board (JKBOCWWB) held in July, CM Abdullah underscored the importance of a broader definition of ‘construction worker’. He aims to ensure that all vulnerable labourers within the unorganised sector are included in such welfare measures. His proactive approach seeks to redefine inclusivity in labor welfare reforms.
“Construction workers are the backbone of our infrastructure development and deserve comprehensive and timely support,” Abdullah remarked, emphasizing the government’s dedication to safeguarding labour rights and dignity. His government intends to explore innovative policies to extend coverage and financial security for these vital workers.
In a somber turn of events, CM Abdullah conveyed profound grief over a tragic bus accident that occurred in Medina, Saudi Arabia. The accident involved a bus carrying 46 Indian Umrah pilgrims, who were en route from Mecca to Medina when the vehicle collided with a tanker.
Reports indicate that the accident claimed the lives of 45 pilgrims, leaving only one survivor, who suffers from serious injuries. CM Abdullah extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and expressed his prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured, showcasing his deep empathy during this tragic incident.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision and determining the necessary actions to assist the affected families. The Chief Minister’s prompt response underscores the state’s commitment to its citizens, both at home and abroad.
As the government allocates substantial funds for welfare and expresses compassion during tragedies, it highlights the ongoing challenge of ensuring safety and support for the labour community, particularly in the face of unforeseen circumstances.
