Former President Ramnath Kovind urged the youth to engage actively in politics, expressing concern that “good people” are shying away from the political landscape. He addressed the gathering as the chief guest at the annual Vijayadashmi rally of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at Reshimbagh ground in Nagpur on Thursday.
Kovind emphasized the significant contributions of RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, which profoundly shaped his perspective on society. He noted, “I was inspired by the values of national unity and social harmony shared by Dr Ambedkar and Dr Hedgewar.” He pointed out the RSS’s commitments against casteism and discrimination, stressing the need for a more inclusive political environment.
During his address, Kovind reflected on how the philosophy of Dr Hedgewar has helped him understand the complexities of Indian society and the nation better. “The vichar (thoughts) of the RSS founder guided me,” he noted, reiterating the importance of ethical leadership in Indian politics.
Highlighting the pressing issues that India faces today, Kovind lamented that “good people” avoid entering politics. He inspired young individuals to step forward and participate, saying, “The youth must be a part of the political process to bring about change.”
In a significant announcement, Kovind shared that he is writing a book titled ‘Triumph of the Indian Republic’, aiming to document his insights and experiences. This reflects his ongoing commitment to nurturing the democratic ethos of India.
The Vijayadashmi rally not only marks the occasion of Dussehra but also celebrates the centenary of the RSS, founded by Hedgewar in 1925. This year’s theme resonates with Kovind’s addressing the reconciliation of traditional values with contemporary political participation, aligning with India’s historical progress.
Experts have noted that encouraging youth participation in politics is essential for a vibrant democracy. Political analyst Dr. Aditi Sharma commented, “The involvement of morally upright leaders is crucial to combat widespread political apathy among citizens.” Kovind’s remarks echo a growing sentiment across the nation about the need for a renewed political spirit.
This rally attracted a diverse crowd, with families and young people keen to partake in discussions about national unity and the role of citizen engagement in democratic processes. Kovind’s address served as a poignant reminder that every citizen has a role to play in shaping India’s future.
As India approaches key elections in the upcoming year, the emphasis on integrity in politics faces renewed urgency. Kovind’s call to action may inspire young and capable individuals to consider a future in the nation’s governance.
