The Mahagathbandhan leaders, comprising the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), convene in Delhi today to finalize their seat-sharing formula for the impending Bihar Assembly elections set for November. This meeting arises amid increasing pressure to solidify their alliance before the national political landscape shifts further.
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav joins forces with his son Tejashwi Yadav and representatives from smaller coalition partners in their quest for a united front against the ruling BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). They aim to establish a strategic seat-sharing agreement ahead of a critical election period.
This dialogue occurs shortly after the NDA formally unveiled its own seat-sharing strategy, putting additional pressure on the opposition bloc to reach an understanding. The urgency mounts as the clock ticks down to the assembly elections.
On Sunday, Mukesh Sahni, leader of the Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) and an ally in the Mahagathbandhan, openly acknowledged the group’s internal divisions. He humorously remarked, “Mahagathbandhan has become a bit unwell. We are going to Delhi, and all the doctors are in Delhi, so better treatment will happen there.” This light-hearted take highlights the seriousness of their current challenge while maintaining an optimistic perspective.
Despite the reported discord, Bihar Congress leader Shakeel Ahmad Khan expressed confidence in the coalition’s stability. He reassured supporters, stating, “A meeting will be held, and everything will be finalized. The Mahagathbandhan is united, and the current corrupt government is certain to go.” Khan’s statements counterbalance concerns about potential fractures within the alliance.
As the political landscape in Bihar unfolds, the NDA has arranged its distribution of 243 assembly seats: JD(U) and BJP are set to contest 101 seats each, while Chirag Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will vie for 29 seats. Additionally, the Hindustani Awam Party (Secular) and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) will each compete for six seats.
The elections for the Bihar Legislative Assembly will take place across two phases, on November 6 and 11, with vote counting scheduled for November 14. This timeline emphasizes the urgency for the Mahagathbandhan to finalize their strategy and mobilize effectively to contest the elections.
