The Congress party escalated its criticism of the BJP and RSS on Monday, accusing them of hatching a conspiracy against Rahul Gandhi. This assertion follows alarming remarks made by Printu Mahadev, a former leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who posed a chilling death threat against the Leader of Opposition.
Media and publicity head Pawan Khera addressed the issue in a press briefing, highlighting that a BJP spokesperson publicly stated that ‘Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest.’ He condemned the lack of action in response to such inflammatory comments, questioning the political motivations behind the decision to politicize Gandhi’s security.
Khera asserted, “This stinks of a conspiracy,” referring to the political tensions surrounding Gandhi as he raises significant issues that resonate from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. The Congress leader claimed, “They are losing the ideological battle,” adding that their inability to engage constructively leads to threats of violence.
Allegations of “vote chori” leveled against the BJP underscore the fractures within India’s ruling party. Khera reiterated that violence against politicians and dissenters undermines democracy, saying, “We will not allow such people to resort to violence.” He called for an exposure of those involved in this conspiracy.
In a strongly worded statement on social media platform X, Khera compared the current threats to those experienced by Mahatma Gandhi during his lifetime. He noted, “When the RSS fails to defeat the ideology of India, their foot soldiers resort to physical violence.”
Congress general secretary K C Venugopal sent an urgent letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, demanding action against Mahadev. Venugopal emphasized that failing to address the threatening remarks constitutes complicity and legitimization of violence against Gandhi, one of India’s most prominent political voices.
He highlighted that Mahadev’s comments were not mere hyperbole but a calculated death threat that puts Gandhi’s life in jeopardy. He stated, “The life of Rahul Gandhi is in immediate danger, undermining not only the rule of law but also the constitutional protections owed to each citizen.”
Venugopal criticized the environment of hostility fostered by such statements, saying, “This threat is symptomatic of a deliberately cultivated, toxic atmosphere of hate.” He warned that inaction would equate to endorsing intimidation and violence in Indian politics.
Furthermore, Venugopal demanded exemplary legal action to effectively address the situation, ensuring justice for Gandhi while safeguarding the democratic principles he represents. “The nation demands swift and visible justice,” he affirmed, indicating the gravity of threats faced by political leaders in the current climate.
The Congress party’s response reflects a broader narrative concerning political tolerance, safety, and the safeguarding of democratic discourse in India, as they stand resolute in defending Gandhi.
