Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut criticized ruling parties in Maharashtra for their failure to appoint Leaders of the Opposition (LoP) in the state legislature during a press conference on Saturday. Raut emphasized that this absence reflects the ruling parties’ fear of democratic scrutiny and undermines democratic principles.
Raut expressed disappointment that Maharashtra lacks a Leader of the Opposition in both the Legislative Assembly and Council. “It is a democratic necessity to have a Leader of Opposition in municipal corporations, state assemblies, and Parliament. It is also a constitutional requirement,” he stated firmly.
The Shiv Sena leader claimed there have been systematic efforts over the last decade to obstruct the appointment of LoPs through electoral manipulation and political pressure. “The BJP has consistently tried to weaken the institution of the Leader of Opposition. Legislative business continues without an LoP, showcasing that the ruling parties fear this role,” he argued.
Historically, Maharashtra has prided itself on appointing Leaders of the Opposition, even when opposition numbers were low. Raut recalled how the BJP had been granted the LoP position despite not having the majority in past legislative assemblies. “This democratic tradition is now under assault, and we must work together to restore it,” he added.
In reaction to the nullification of the LoP position, opposition parties have escalated their demands for its appointment in both Houses of the Maharashtra legislature. The Shiv Sena (UBT) has put forth Bhaskar Jadhav for the Assembly role, while the Congress party supports Satej Patil for the Council.
Raut also expressed strong opposition to any division of Maharashtra, condemning recent comments by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule regarding the potential creation of a separate Vidarbha state. He raised concerns about the implications of such proposals, pointing to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s support.
“Shiv Sena (UBT) will staunchly oppose any endeavor to divide Maharashtra. The unity of our state is non-negotiable,” Raut declared, reinforcing the need for solidarity among Maharashtra’s citizens.
In a broader context, Raut referenced the recent Vande Mataram debate in Parliament where he noted visible enthusiasm stemming from the participation of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. “Their presence invigorated the debate and reinforced the belief that democracy is alive and thriving. The BJP struggled to maintain composure during this robust exchange,” he stated.
Raut concluded by calling for an urgent discussion on the Maharashtra Geet in the state legislature, asserting it would ignite important discussions about the contributions of various leaders and movements in the state’s formation.
