178 Indians Missing in Nepal Flash Floods; 175 Bodies Found

At least 178 Indian nationals are among hundreds reported missing after devastating flash floods struck areas along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers in Nepal. The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) confirmed the details on Thursday, as search and rescue operations intensify.

The floods have wreaked havoc in parts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha districts. Roads, bridges, and riverside settlements have suffered severe damage, heightening the urgency for rescue efforts. Current reports indicate a combined total of 644 travelers from various countries, including 127 Nepali nationals, are reported missing from the impacted areas.

In its latest update, the NTB emphasized the need for verification of initial claims. The data is currently being cross-checked with trekking and travel agencies, local authorities, and security agencies to ensure accuracy.

Among the 644 missing, there are also 53 Ukrainians, 35 Australians, and 25 Canadians, alongside individuals from several other nations. As of now, 175 bodies have been recovered; however, numerous local residents and tourists remain unaccounted for.

The Nepal Embassy has reported that at least 476 people from 28 different countries have been labeled as missing, underscoring the scale of the tragedy. Rescue operations are ongoing, and these numbers might fluctuate as new information emerges.

The varying reports from different agencies remain provisional as Nepal’s security forces, deploying helicopters and ground teams, work tirelessly to navigate the damage and aid both residents and tourists affected by the flooding.

Local authorities have prioritized medical assistance, temporary shelters, food, drinking water, and essential medicines for those impacted. Rescue operations aim to improve the situation for many still stranded.

Despite the alarming situation across the border, Indian officials have reported no adverse flood impact in Indian border areas. National Disaster Response Force Inspector General Narendra Singh Bundela confirmed this, adding that agencies monitor water levels carefully in sensitive districts like Kushinagar and West Champaran.

Moreover, both state governments and the Central Water Commission are on high alert to prevent any potential repercussions stemming from the floods in Nepal.

In light of the unfolding crisis, India has ramped up its humanitarian efforts. The Ministry of External Affairs announced that a second flight, carrying 37.5 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, including medicines and food packets, had been dispatched to Nepal.

The Indian Embassy in Nepal has activated helplines for those seeking assistance: +977 985 131 6807, +977 970 910 7500, and +977 981 032 6117. These numbers are also accessible via WhatsApp, ensuring immediate support for those impacted by this disaster.
