Labourers rescued at a construction site in Jammu and Kashmir

Two labourers had a narrow escape after a mound of earth caved in at a road construction site in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening while the labourers dug a roadside drain in Beri-Pattan, near Sunderbani.

According to officials, the cave-in trapped the two workers under the heavy soil. Fortunately, their fellow labourers acted swiftly, risking their own safety to pull the trapped men out of the debris.

Local authorities reported that both labourers sustained minor injuries but avoided serious harm due to the prompt action of their colleagues. Rescue efforts at the scene showcased the importance of teamwork and quick decision-making in emergency situations.

Officials urged construction companies to enhance safety measures at work sites. They emphasized the need for proper training and equipment to prevent such incidents in the future. The latest cave-in highlights ongoing safety concerns in the construction sector across Jammu and Kashmir, where changing weather conditions and insufficient safety protocols often pose risks for workers.

In an interview, district officials stated, “It’s crucial for employers to provide adequate training and support to their workers. We are looking into the safety standards being followed at construction sites to ensure such incidents do not happen again.” During monsoon season, soil instability increases, heightening the chances of collapses at excavation sites.

The department of labour has vowed to conduct inspections of ongoing projects in the region, focusing on compliance with safety regulations. They aim to ensure that no worker faces life-threatening situations due to negligence.

In the wake of this incident, community members have also called for greater oversight of construction activities. Many locals have expressed concerns over safety practices, urging local authorities to take swift action against companies failing to meet required standards.

This incident serves as a reminder of the inherent dangers faced by labourers in the construction industry, especially in regions like Jammu and Kashmir. Ensuring the safety of construction workers remains a top priority for both the government and contractors.
