External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for stronger solidarity among Global South nations and a unified approach to reforming the United Nations during a key meeting at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly on Tuesday in New York. He emphasized that the Global South should enhance its collective voice and influence to address pressing global issues.

During the High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South countries, Jaishankar pointed out the various challenges faced by developing nations, stating, “In the face of a proliferation of global concerns and multiplicity of risks, it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.” His statement emphasizes the essential role of multilateralism in addressing shared concerns.

To bolster the effectiveness of developing countries in international affairs, Jaishankar proposed five key strategies aimed at strengthening collaboration among the Global South. He highlighted the need to utilize existing forums to enhance consultations, thus fostering solidarity and collaboration.

Furthermore, Jaishankar advocated for comprehensive reform of the UN and multilateralism, asserting that the Global South must bring its unique strengths and experiences to the international stage. He cited various fields, including vaccines, digital capabilities, education, and agro-practices, as areas where developing nations can lead.

Jaishankar insisted on an equitable approach to global issues, particularly in the areas of climate action and justice. He urged the Global South to develop initiatives that prioritize their interests, rather than passively aligning with the Global North. This strategic shift, he believes, could lead to more effective solutions tailored to the realities of developing nations.

The importance of engaging in discussions about emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, was also a significant focus of the minister’s remarks. He called for ensuring that developing nations are not sidestepped in the rapidly evolving technological landscape.

India has long championed the voice of the Global South on international platforms, pledging to facilitate a more significant role for developing nations in shaping the global agenda. Jaishankar’s comments at this high-profile meeting underscore that commitment, reflecting India’s dedication to fostering a cooperative approach among developing nations.

Jaishankar’s advocacy for reform and solidarity underscores a pivotal moment for the Global South, as nations strive to find common ground in the struggle for equitable representation and resource allocation in global governance.
