A Jammu and Kashmir Police constable faces arrest linked to the shooting death of a Gujjar youth, Mohammad Parvez, in a controversial incident on July 24 near Sure Chak village. This recent arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing pursuit of justice for the victim’s family.

Former Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti commended the arrest, stating it serves as a critical reminder that law enforcement officials are not above the law. Her remarks underscore the growing public demand for accountability within the police force.

Mohammad Parvez, only 21 years old, lived in Niki Tawi when he was fatally shot during what officials described as a shootout. However, his community disputes the police narrative, insisting he was unjustly killed during a “fake encounter” rather than being involved in criminal activity.

The incident ignited widespread protests within the Gujjar community, who vehemently condemned the police’s characterization of Parvez as a drug dealer. Outraged community members called for a fair inquiry, prompting police to form a special investigation team (SIT) and launch a magisterial probe.

Political leaders, including Omar Abdullah, voiced their concerns and visited Parvez’s family, advocating for thorough and swift investigation processes. They emphasized the need for transparency to restore faith in law enforcement institutions.

Following investigations by the SIT, officials arrested selection grade constable Pawan Singh. He now faces charges under section 105 of the BNS, which covers culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Additional details regarding the case remain undisclosed.

Singh, along with head constable Baljinder Singh, had faced suspension immediately after the shooting as authorities sought to understand the circumstances surrounding Parvez’s death.

Mehbooba Mufti’s statement on social media highlighted her belief that the arrest was a crucial step towards justice for Parvez. She reiterated that the accountability of police personnel is paramount to uphold public trust and safety.

“The tragic death of Parvez brings to light the pressing need for systemic reforms within the police structure,” she noted in her statement. “Although nothing can bring back a life lost, this arrest offers hope that justice will ultimately prevail.”

Mufti also expressed gratitude to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Joginder Singh, for his role in ensuring a fair investigation under the leadership of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu. She called on authorities to continue the judicial process and emphasized that the courts must now play their role in delivering justice.

The ongoing discourse regarding police accountability highlights critical issues within law enforcement practices in Jammu and Kashmir. As the case unfolds, many await further developments in both courtroom proceedings and community responses.

This case has reignited discussions on police reforms and the need for enhanced oversight mechanisms to prevent similar incidents. The people of Jammu and Kashmir continue to seek assurance that law enforcement ultimately aims to protect, not harm, the communities they serve.
