Sakeena Itoo, the Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, inaugurated the two-day Annual Sports Meet-2025 at the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar on January 15, 2025. The event took place at the Boys Hostel playground in Bemina and brought together students and faculty for a vibrant showcase of sportsmanship.

During her address, Minister Itoo underscored the vital connection between the physical and mental well-being of healthcare professionals and the quality of healthcare delivery. She praised GMC Srinagar for organizing this year’s sports meet and noted that participation in sports and recreational activities plays a significant role in stress management, especially for students pursuing rigorous medical training.

Furthermore, the minister urged the GMC administration to enhance the facilities at the Boys Hostel playground to encourage greater involvement of students in extracurricular activities. This call aligns with a wider initiative to promote a holistic approach to student well-being within the medical field.

The Annual Sports Meet, planned under the guidance of Chairman Sports Committee Dr. Salim Iqbal, features a diverse range of sporting events. Participants engage in competitions such as cricket, volleyball, football, badminton, and table tennis. Traditional games, including carrom, tug of war, and musical chair, contribute to the festive atmosphere while enhancing team spirit.

A highlight of the event includes track and field events comprising 100m, 200m, 400m sprints, relays, shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw. In addition, light-hearted activities such as the matka race, sack race, and spoon and egg race facilitated camaraderie among participants and promoted physical fitness.

Notably, the event witnessed attendance from key figures including Principal Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, Administrator Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Heads of Departments, Medical Superintendents, faculty members, students, and administrative staff. The participation of diverse stakeholders highlighted the community’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment for future medical professionals.

The Annual Sports Meet-2025 stands as a testament to GMC Srinagar’s dedication not only to academic excellence but also to the overall development of its students. As Sakeena Itoo aptly articulated, the integration of sports into medical education can significantly improve the personal and professional lives of aspiring healthcare providers. This commitment to sports in healthcare reaffirms the institution’s role in shaping well-rounded medical professionals who excel in both mental and physical domains.
