Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Earth Sciences, and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh visited the India Meteorological Department (IMD) today to review the indigenous Multi-Hazard Early Warning Decision Support System (DSS). This system has resulted in a remarkable cost saving of ₹250 crore.

During his visit, the Minister commended IMD for creating a self-reliant and technology-driven forecasting platform that bolsters disaster preparedness and promotes public safety throughout the nation. He emphasized that the DSS’s cost efficiency eliminates reliance on foreign vendors, saving an additional ₹5.5 crore in annual maintenance costs, in alignment with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.

Additionally, Dr. Singh reviewed “Mausamgram”, a citizen-focused weather information platform that delivers hyperlocal forecasts at the village level. This innovative system provides users with hourly forecasts for 36 hours, three-hourly forecasts for 5 days, and six-hourly forecasts for up to 10 days. Citizens can easily access forecasts by PIN code, location name, or by choosing their state, district, block, and gram panchayat. The platform is available in all official Indian languages, ensuring accessibility for all.

The IMD has also modernized its forecast and alert generation process. This upgrade extends its lead time from 5 to 7 days, reduces forecast preparation time by three hours, and enhances forecast accuracy by 15–20%. Such improvements demonstrate IMD’s commitment to excellence in public safety.

In a discussion with IMD officials, Dr. Singh stressed the need for incorporating AI-based tools into “Mausamgram”. His aim is to make the platform more interactive and user-friendly. He urged the department to enhance the structure of the Multi-Hazard Early Warning System to offer citizens clear and actionable alerts for timely disaster responses.

Dr. Singh congratulated the IMD team for their achievement in winning the National Award for e-Governance 2025 at the National Conference on e-Governance in Visakhapatnam. This recognition highlights IMD’s excellence in digital public service delivery through the DSS.

The Minister also applauded the Department’s initiatives under the Special Swachhata Program, which has generated ₹30 lakh from the disposal of e-waste and old files, successfully clearing 600 square meters of space. During his visit, he participated in the “Special Swachhata Program 5.0” at IMD’s headquarters, Mausam Bhavan, where he planted a sapling under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign and honored 50 “Safai Mitras” for their dedicated work.

Looking towards the future, Dr. Singh outlined Mission Mausam, which, by 2030, aims to equip IMD with advanced meteorological instruments. This project is set to enhance IMD’s forecasting abilities, enabling 5×5 km-scale hazard forecasting, dynamic impact-based forecasting, and risk-based early warnings. The initiative aims to achieve effective last-mile connectivity, ensuring that early warnings reach every household, thus fulfilling the concept of “Har Har Mausam, Har Ghar Mausam.”
