Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Former Chief Minister and National Conference president, stated today that Jammu is witnessing genuine inclusive development under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s government. During his meeting with the National Conference delegation, he highlighted the positive changes integrating citizens into the democratic process.
Abdullah emphasized that the current government restores trust in democratic institutions. He noted, “The Omar Abdullah-led government is making rapid strides to restore people’s faith in democratic institutions.” He criticized past leadership for providing empty promises and highlighted the proactive measures now being taken to address Jammu’s pressing issues.
The delegation brought forth several long-standing issues that they believe accumulated during previous BJP-led administration. Dr. Abdullah assured members that the National Conference acknowledges these challenges and is determined to implement solutions. He commended the current governance for addressing the setbacks experienced by Jammu over the last decade.
One key topic was the much-discussed Smart City project, which, according to Abdullah, suffered from inadequate infrastructure. He observed that recent rains led to waterlogging, revealing flaws in the ambitious project’s planning. His remarks stressed the need for substantial improvements to infrastructure in urban development initiatives.
Amid discussions on development, Abdullah highlighted regulatory and infrastructural advances initiated by the Omar Abdullah government. He noted efforts to restore the Mubarak Mandi heritage complex, which had seen neglect in previous years. Notably, he pointed out that free transport services for women now enhance mobility across Jammu. Additionally, increasing ration quotas provide necessary support to families in need.
Abdullah also mentioned the revival of the Darbar Move, a cultural practice that reconnects traders and citizens, boosting Jammu’s economy. He called for ongoing and upcoming projects, such as new ropeways and riverside development, to thrust Jammu into the national tourism spotlight.
Encouraging party members to engage actively, he urged preparation for the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) and Panchayat elections, stressing the importance of robust public outreach. Abdullah made a passionate plea for prioritizing representation for youth and women in governance to align political initiatives with their aspirations.
In a related event, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah urged Gujjar institutions to conduct scientific research into climate change impacts on their community. Addressing attendees at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust (GDCT) in Jammu, he advocated for evaluating how climate change affects the Gujjar-Bakerwal lifestyle, particularly as traditional nomadic practices expose them to environmental challenges.
Omar Abdullah stated, “There is no dearth of talent in Gujjar institutions. If this talent is channelised into research on climate change, it will strengthen the community.” He called for enhanced educational initiatives for Gujjar youth, suggesting the establishment of hostels, schools, and mobile schools.
Additionally, the Chief Minister questioned the concrete benefits of reservation policies, urging for thorough assessments to understand their real impact on the community. “We have spoken about reservation for years, but serious studies on its real benefits are still lacking,” he stated.
Dr. Farooq Abdullah concluded the gathering by emphasizing the importance of unity within the community and urged a focus on education as a foundational element for a secure future. He reiterated that education remains the key for the next generation.
The event was attended by several Ministers, MLAs, former Ministers, and representatives from the Gujjar community, all of whom echoed the sentiment for better governance and inclusive development.
