Opposition MPs Protest Alleged Ram Temple Donation Theft

Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) staged a protest in the Parliament House complex on Tuesday, addressing two pressing issues: the alleged theft of donations meant for the Ram temple in Ayodhya and reported police violence against student demonstrators.

During the protest, which included prominent leaders like Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, MPs brandished placards and shouted slogans like ‘chhanda chor, gaddi chor’ and ‘Amit Shah jawaab do’. The demonstration took place near the Makar Dwar of Parliament, symbolising their dissent against the current government.

To draw attention to the alleged misappropriation of temple funds, protesters placed donation boxes at the site. They surrounded the boxes and raised slogans, emphasizing both the symbolic significance of donations and the dissatisfaction towards the government. Several MPs contributed cash to the boxes, representing both the donations intended for the temple and highlighting the claim of their theft.

Alongside Priyanka Gandhi, notable participants included SP’s Dimple Yadav and Dharmendra Yadav, TMC’s Sagarika Ghose, RJD’s Sanjay Yadav and Manoj Jha, and RSP’s NK Premchandran, among others, all joining forces to challenge the government’s actions.

The MPs congregated behind a large banner that read ‘Why Amit Shah absent from Parliament?’, directing further anger towards the Home Minister for his perceived absence during critical discussions.

The opposition coalition, known as the INDIA bloc, aims to mount a vigorous attack on the government regarding two key concerns: the alleged theft of donations (often referred to as ‘chhanda chori’) and the brutal police crackdown against student protesters last week.

In a strategic move, floor leaders from various INDIA bloc parties convened in the chamber of Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge. They collectively expressed their intent to confront the government over these significant issues during the ongoing session.

The accusations surrounding the Ram temple donations come at a sensitive time when political tensions in India run high. The temple, a focal point of Hindu sentiments, has attracted significant public attention and donations, making these allegations particularly impactful.

Moreover, the concern regarding police actions against students resonates deeply in the current socio-political climate. Many view the police’s response during recent demonstrations as authoritarian, prompting calls for greater accountability and reform.

The opposition’s protests reflect a larger narrative of scrutiny over governmental transparency and accountability, especially regarding donor funds and handling of peaceful protests. While the government has yet to release a comprehensive response to the allegations, the opposition’s campaign continues to gain momentum.

As the parliamentary session progresses, observers will closely watch how the government addresses these pressing issues of alleged donations theft and police violence against students, which are likely to dominate discussions in the coming days.
