The Shri Amarnath Yatra has been suspended from Jammu towards Srinagar and Baltal as of Sunday, August 9, 2023, due to adverse weather conditions and ongoing track restoration efforts. Officials confirmed that no fresh convoy of pilgrims would depart from Jammu for the base camps due to recent rains causing significant damage to the pilgrimage tracks.
Officials noted that the forecast indicated further adverse weather, compelling them to halt the Yatra for the safety of the devotees. However, pilgrims who had already completed darshan at the holy cave were allowed to return towards Jammu. This closure led to a revised travel plan for many, ensuring that all pilgrims, especially vulnerable groups, safely navigated their journeys.
According to the Joint Police Control Room, Baltal, as of Sunday morning, a total of 588 pilgrims, including 435 men, 83 women, four children, and 66 sadhus, were making their way back to Jammu in 53 vehicles. These pilgrims were moving through the Ramban-Banihal sector of National Highway-44, where the road conditions were particularly treacherous due to ongoing rainfall.
Authorities highlighted that the suspension of the pilgrimage is a precautionary measure. They ordered the Yatra’s suspension from both the Baltal and Pahalgam routes, given the recent rains and the forecasted unfavourable conditions. Officials emphasized that the safety of the pilgrims remains their utmost priority.
The Yatra, a vital pilgrimage in the Hindu calendar, attracts thousands of devotees to the sacred Amarnath cave each year. It typically runs during the summer months when weather conditions are most suitable. However, unpredictable weather has been causing disruptions, creating challenges for both pilgrims and the management teams on-ground.
As the situation unfolds, authorities have assured that the Yatra will only resume when conditions improve. The restoration of the damaged tracks is a crucial step in this process, and officials will evaluate the state of the paths to ensure they are safe for movement. Updates regarding the resumption of the Yatra will be communicated via official channels to keep all interested parties informed.
