Hyderabad Cybercrime Police arrested a 30-year-old software employee for allegedly creating a fake Instagram account to defame a woman in a disturbing case that raises important questions about online harassment. The arrest took place in Kachiguda with the accused facing serious charges.
According to V Aravind Babu, Deputy Commissioner of Police for Cyber Crimes, the accused allegedly targeted a Hyderabad-based woman known for her political involvement. In October 2025, he reportedly used the fake profile to post abusive comments about the woman, following the sharing of a video featuring her by the ‘Pura Local’ Instagram channel on social media.
The victim’s complaint led police to register a case under Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act, along with relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These laws address cybercrimes and provide remedies for victims of online harassment.
Police officials stated that the accused created this fake account to hide his identity, intending to embarrass and harass the complainant through offensive content. Law enforcement seized one mobile phone from him as crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation.
In light of this incident, police emphasized the importance of vigilance against online harassment. They advised users to take screenshots of abusive profiles and comments, as such information can be invaluable for legal action. They recommended that users block and report accounts that engage in harassment.
Additionally, the cybercrime unit urged the public to verify unknown social media accounts before interacting with them. Sharing or commenting on unverified content can expose users to misinformation and malicious intent.
This arrest highlights the increasing need for awareness and stringent legal frameworks to combat the growing menace of online defamation and harassment, especially targeting women. The Hyderabad Police continues to advocate for safer online spaces as more cases of cybercrime emerge.
