Kishtwar Cloudburst Damages Houses; Waterlogging in Shopian

A cloudburst struck the Chatroo area of Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Saturday, causing significant damage to houses and infrastructure. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. and led to a surge of water and debris, although no casualties or injuries have been reported thus far.

Authorities reported that several residential buildings sustained damage due to the force of the cloudburst. Following the event, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Chatroo promptly arrived at the scene, accompanied by police and civil administration teams to assess the damage and implement relief measures. Restoration efforts are currently underway to support those affected.

This cloudburst comes amid an ongoing pattern of moderate to heavy rainfall that has enveloped the Jammu and Kashmir region. The Meteorological Department had previously issued warnings of intense showers, projecting potential flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging in vulnerable areas across the Jammu division.

In a related incident, heavy rainfall resulted in severe waterlogging in the Pahlipora area of Shopian district, south Kashmir. Rainwater penetrated several residences, prompting local authorities to deploy police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel for rescue and relief operations.

Authorities have urged residents, especially those living in low-lying and landslide-prone regions, to exercise caution and avoid accessing streams, nallahs, and unstable slopes until weather conditions improve. The increased awareness becomes essential during this period of unpredictable weather.

Officials indicated that they will continue to monitor the situation closely in Chatroo and surrounding areas, ensuring that timely assistance is provided to residents as details about the incident emerge.
