KL Rahul Praises Galle Wicket After India’s 165-Run Victory

Indian cricketer KL Rahul praised the quality of the Galle surface after India clinched a 165-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first Test, describing the encounter as a “great Test match”. The pitch provided balanced support for batters and bowlers during the five-day contest.

All-rounder Manav Suthar delivered a match-winning performance, claiming a remarkable 10-wicket haul in only his second Test. This victory gives India a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Earlier, Devdutt Padikkal’s phenomenal 167 runs set the foundation for India’s commanding position, leading to his recognition as Player of the Match.

In the post-match analysis, KL Rahul commended the Galle pitch for maintaining its integrity over five days. He noted that the surface aided spinners while also allowing disciplined batters an opportunity to score runs. Rahul highlighted Sonal Dinusha’s performance, where he scored 100 in Sri Lanka’s first innings and 84 in the second, despite their defeat.

“I think it was a great Test match. The wicket played really well throughout the five days. There was something for spinners, but the batters who applied themselves could score as well. Sonal batted beautifully with a clear game plan. Test matches thrive on this balance, where both fast bowlers and spinners find success,” KL Rahul stated.

Significantly, the rain started immediately after India’s victory. Rahul expressed relief among the players, especially with rain threatening to disrupt the match. He emphasized that under Shubman Gill’s leadership, the team focused on capturing quick wickets, successfully ending Keshara Nuwantha and Dinusha’s crucial partnership to regain momentum.

“Just relieved, honestly! We were aware of the impending rain. We aimed to get wickets quickly and once we broke that partnership, it gave us confidence. We believed we could seize the tail’s wickets early,” he explained.

India successfully bowled Sri Lanka out for 206 while defending a target of 372. Manav Suthar’s outstanding performance featured figures of 6/55 in the second innings, marking his maiden 10-wicket haul.

On the fifth day, Sri Lanka resumed play at 84/4, with Dinusha and Dhananjaya de Silva providing strong resistance. They added 95 runs before Jadeja dismissed Dhananjaya for 59. Dinusha continued his valiant effort with a score of 84, but Suthar then struck decisively in the 76th over, taking three wickets, including Keshara Nuwantha to seal the win.

India recorded 464 runs in their first innings, helped by Padikkal’s 167 runs and KL Rahul’s 82. Sri Lanka responded with 284 runs, with Dinusha contributing 100. India was bowled out for 193 in the second innings, setting Sri Lanka a target of 372 runs.
