Congress statement on Ladakh protests

The Congress party on Friday urged the Indian government to respond swiftly to the legitimate aspirations of the people of Ladakh. This appeal comes on the heels of heightened distress following violent protests demanding statehood, which resulted in four fatalities and numerous injuries on Wednesday.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh voiced disappointment over the government’s handling of Ladakh’s situation, stating that six years after it became a Union Territory, the expectations of its citizens have not been met. Ramesh emphasized, “There has been massive disappointment and disenchantment among the people.”

In his statement, Ramesh highlighted severe threats to land and employment rights faced by the local populace. He pointed out that the administration and elected bodies have been dominated by bureaucratic control under the Lieutenant Governor, stripping locals of their authority.

“The people have witnessed only a series of meetings regarding their demands for protection under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, as well as for an elected legislature,” he remarked on social media platform X.

Ramesh further drew attention to the rising geopolitical tensions, noting the “great uncertainty” stemming from China’s activities along the Line of Actual Control and criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “clean chit to China” issued on June 19, 2020.

Ladakh holds considerable cultural, economic, ecological, and strategic significance for India, as articulated by Ramesh. He reiterated the pride and patriotism of the Ladakhi people, stating that their “distress and anguish must awaken the Government of India’s conscience.”

As the situation in Ladakh remained tense, an uneasy calm prevailed on Thursday. Authorities implemented a strict curfew in Leh, one day after protests turned violent. Law enforcement has detained at least 50 individuals involved in the unrest, which erupted during a shutdown organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) demanding enhanced legal protections and statehood for Ladakh.

The Congress party’s call for urgent governmental action reflects a broader concern that the needs and aspirations of Ladakh’s populace must not be ignored. With the discourse around statehood intensifying, it remains crucial for all stakeholders to recognize the importance of resolving these issues promptly and effectively.

As protests continue, the focus remains on how the government will respond to these calls for action and whether they will take substantial steps towards fulfilling the commitments made to the people of Ladakh.
