Curfew imposed in Leh, Ladakh amid ongoing protests

Leh town remains under strict curfew for the third consecutive day on Friday, as a team from the Union Home Ministry conducts meetings to assess the ongoing security situation in the region. Authorities have reported no significant incidents amidst the unrest which flared following widespread protests demanding statehood for Ladakh.

The curfew was first imposed on Wednesday evening in the wake of protests that tragically claimed four lives and injured over ninety others. The shutdown, organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB), aims to press for Ladakh’s inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, a move designed to safeguard the region’s unique identity and promote self-governance.

Despite the curfew, the situation remains largely calm across Ladakh. Authorities are considering relaxing some restrictions later in the day to facilitate essential activities. However, to deter further unrest, police and paramilitary forces are conducting patrols throughout the streets.

District Magistrate Leh, Romil Singh, has mandated the closure of all government and private educational institutions for two days starting Friday. This decision reflects the administration’s focus on maintaining peace and security during these tense times.

A high-level team from the Ministry of Home Affairs arrived in Leh on Thursday to gauge the situation closely. Singh confirmed that over fifty individuals have been detained in connection with the protests, emphasizing the government’s commitment to uphold law and order.

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, stated, “The videos being circulated are deliberate attempts to disturb peace in Ladakh. We cannot allow the future of our youth to be compromised. Any such incidents will be dealt with under a zero-tolerance policy.” His comments highlight the administration’s resolve to counter misinformation and ensure stability.

The ongoing unrest has raised alarm among local residents and officials alike, with many echoing the need for dialogue to address pressing demands for statehood and constitutional acknowledgment. As the situation evolves, the government’s response will be crucial in shaping the future landscape of governance and peace in Ladakh.
