NEW DELHI: As of November 1, 2023, Delhi’s air quality continues to deteriorate, falling into the ‘poor’ category, with the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) increasing from 218 to 251, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
The situation worsens as eight monitoring stations across Delhi registered AQI levels in the ‘very poor’ category. Areas like Wazirpur report an alarming AQI reading of 333. These figures highlight the pressing concern over air pollution in the capital.
The rise in AQI levels poses serious health risks to residents. Experts warn that prolonged exposure to poor air quality can lead to respiratory issues, heart diseases, and other health complications, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
Environmental factors and anthropogenic activities contribute significantly to the deteriorating air quality in the city. Emissions from vehicles, industrial discharges, and construction dust play critical roles in exacerbating pollution levels. The CPCB urges residents to limit outdoor activities, especially in the early morning and late evening when pollution tends to intensify.
Government initiatives are underway to tackle air pollution, including stricter enforcement of emission standards and promotion of eco-friendly transportation options. However, immediate actions, such as the implementation of odd-even vehicle registration systems during peak pollution months, remain a vital strategy to curb vehicular emissions.
Authorities recommend that people wear masks and use air purifiers indoors to maintain respiratory health. Increased public awareness campaigns aim to educate citizens on the importance of sustainable living practices that can contribute to improving air quality.
This latest AQI data serves as a reminder of the ongoing battle against air pollution in Delhi, a challenge that requires concerted efforts from the government, industry, and individuals alike.
