Two-time Olympic shuttler PV Sindhu opened up on her special bond with cricket icon Virat Kohli, amid her journey in the BWF World Championships. In a recent episode of the RCB Podcast, she revealed how Kohli’s advice uplifted her during her lowest phases.
Sindhu, who is competing at the BWF World Championships in New Delhi, shared her heartfelt connection with the batting superstar, referring to him as her ‘brother’. She disclosed how Kohli’s words provided her with the motivation to persevere and embrace challenges.
During the podcast, she recounted a moment when she felt discouraged. Kohli encouraged her to show up for matches and training, reinforcing a vital lesson. “He is like my brother I must say. I remember when I was at my lowest, I met him and said, ‘Nothing is happening.’ He just said, ‘Just show up.’ It was okay to be in the arena,” she explained.
Sindhu further elaborated on the significance of Kohli’s advice: “He asked me to show up, anywhere, for anything, and just play my game. What would happen? You are not going to lose anything. You know who you are, how you have trained, and just show the world your true self.” This conversation proved to be a turning point in her mindset.
Maintaining their connection, Sindhu shared that she often updates Kohli about her achievements. “Whenever I win, I share my happiness, say I have won this or that. It is always great to meet someone who has achieved so much. Just receiving insights from him about how he thinks during matches and how he showcases his talent is inspiring,” she said with admiration.
On the competitive front, the five-time World Championships medallist showcased her formidable skills, dominating Ireland’s Sophia Noble in the first round of the BWF World Championships, clinching victory with scores of 21-7, 21-11 in the women’s singles Round of 64.
Sindhu’s journey embodies resilience and the camaraderie that transcends sport. Through guidance and friendship with Virat Kohli, she continues to inspire athletes across the nation.
