Tight Security Measures in Kashmir Ahead of Independence Day

As Independence Day approaches, Kashmir has ramped up security protocols to ensure safe celebrations. The region’s police chief, V K Birdi, confirmed on Tuesday that authorities initiated multi-layered security arrangements throughout the valley.

During a press briefing after inspecting the preparations at Balidan Stambh, Birdi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Kashmir, stated, “Jammu and Kashmir Police maintains robust security not just in Srinagar, but across various districts of the valley.”

The police implemented extensive measures at not only the primary venues but also in surrounding areas to deter any potential disturbances. The inspector general sought to reassure the public regarding the safety of the gatherings.

Responding to questions about recent attacks in Anantnag and Pulwama, Birdi noted that investigations remain ongoing. He emphasized, “It would not be appropriate for me to disclose details right now. We will share relevant information as it becomes available.”

Birdi encouraged residents to actively participate in the Independence Day celebrations. He stated, “This is a public function. The police acts only as a facilitator. We urge people to make these events successful by joining in large numbers.”

The IGP held a thorough security review meeting on Monday, assessing measures for the upcoming festivities across the valley. Key officials from various security organizations, including the IG of BSF and CRPF, contributed to the discussions.

During the meeting, senior officers updated Birdi on the security arrangements prepared in each district for Independence Day. The officers detailed their strategies to ensure both safety and a vibrant celebration.

Birdi directed his team to enhance patrolling and area dominance, especially in sensitive locales, as part of their proactive security measures. His focus remains on the main event scheduled at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium, urging officers to finalize preparations promptly.

Furthermore, the IGP emphasized the need for stricter security checkpoints, particularly during the night at vulnerable sites and along city routes during this period. He called for heightened vigilance against peace-threatening entities, urging all jurisdictions to remain alert.

To support these initiatives, police have begun conducting surprise checks and frisking operations in key areas such as Lal Chowk and adjoining neighborhoods. These efforts aim to reassure residents and deter any potential unlawful activities.

The heightened security measures reflect the ongoing commitment to safeguarding the region’s stability and promoting communal participation in the Independence Day festivities. Authorities remain focused on creating a secure environment for everyone involved.
